Nasty, gnarly, ragged, and jagged, "Unholy" by Sweden's MY OWN GRAVE is the sound of vintage Swedish death metal (i.e. bullshit-free and burnt to a crisp). Hardly inventive, but oh so well played, the only attribute worth bitching about is the short running time: 16 minutes (five songs),but that's hardly a problem when the scythes cut deep and the blood flows like a river. The carnage on this one is rather tasty.
It is quite simple: "Unholy" begins speeding down the tracks with crunching riffs and demonic growls (punctuated with evil shrieks) and continues for the duration of the album. A guitar tone that is dangerously sharp and a pummeling rhythm section make the attack that much more lethal. Though "melodic" is not a term that comes to mind, the songs are not totally devoid of tunefulness either. You may not be humming happily to little ditties like "Buried", but the songs do not blur to together from one track to the next either, providing the listener with something to remember and a hankerin' to go back and do it all over again. Dive bomb solos and blistering leads add lots of spice to the relentless bludgeoning as well.
Singapore's Pulverised Records always seem to release pleasant surprises like MY OWN GRAVE's "Unholy", which just goes to show that the underground still has a lot to offer the discerning extreme metal fan. If you are looking for a quick death metal fix, it would be hard to go wrong with "Unholy".
